The Hood Canal near Belfair

Theler Wetlands on Hood Canel near Belfair

For decades, the health of South Puget Sound waters has been a critical focus of the State of Washington’s Department of Ecology. It is remarkable how clear these waters have been maintained due to the efforts of our counties to regulate residential septic systems – the successes in Henderson Inlet is a recent example.

Thurston County (Olympia, Washington area) has been a mentor to provide the necessary guidelines to keep our water free of pollutants however, in the end, it is up to the individual home owner to understand how they can do their part.  After all, if waterfront owners did their part, we wouldn’t need regulation.

As a service to all of us who live on open water, I want to connect you to the knowledge being shared by Thurston County and the State Department of Ecology.  I would encourage everyone to accept the stewardship of having access to a precious public resource and take care of your septic.
