Local saltwater boaters will have to be careful Saturday, as the two-day recreational season for prawn-size spot shrimp opens and a huge crowd.
As we told you last March, shrimp season opens May 5, this Saturday and lasts only this weekend.
“Preseason testing showed results as good as we ever see around here,” said state Fish and Wildlife Department biologist Mark O’Toole in the agency’s La Conner office. “As good or better than last season, which was a very good one.”
Spot shrimp run about 12 to the pound, he said, and the recreational limit is 80 shrimp per person.

New Olympic Peninsula totems are always exciting and a reason for celebration.
For the past eight months, Olympic Peninsula Tlinglet master carver Israel Shotridge has been shaping a 40-foot red cedar into two 15-foot totems and a 30-foot sculpted facade in the Coast Salish style.
The work was commissioned by the Quileute Tribe on the Olympic Peninsula; members of their tribe came to Vashon from LaPush last August to bless the red cedar and bring good harmony to the carvers.

The Belfair bypass remains the highest highway priority between Bremerton and Shelton.
The final Bremerton Economic Development Study released Friday by the state Department of Transportation looks nearly identical to a 20-month-old-draft, with the long-awaited bypass on top. The $76 million project is in the midst of an environmental assessment, and got about $400,000 from the recently adjourned Legislature on top of an original $750,000 to complete the work. Jeff Sawyer, project manager with WSDOT’s environmental and hydraulic division, said it should be finished around June 2013.
